Coronary angioplasty and stent placement – It is popularly known as balloon angioplasty or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The procedure done by a cardiologist involves reopening the blocked artery by a small balloon. The balloon, attached to the catheter and guided to the blockage in the artery and inflated. Sometimes a coronary stent is placed to prevent narrowing or closing again in future.
The stent is a small wire that looks like a mesh tube or coil. some stents are even coated with anti-blocking medicine to prevent narrowing of arteries again.
